Help Berrytown Grow Its Next Generation

Founded in 1874 by Alfred Berry, a formerly enslaved Kentuckian, Berrytown is one of Jefferson County’s historic African American communities. Rooted in perseverance, agriculture, family, faith, and community ownership, its legacy continues through the Berrytown Community Land Trust, an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit community-based organization working to preserve affordability and create pathways to housing, urban agriculture, economic opportunity, and long-term community investment.

Urban Farming Youth Summer Camp

In summer 2027, we will launch a free, eight-week Urban Farming Youth Summer Camp for up to 25 elementary and middle-school students at the Berrytown Microfarm Training & Education Center, located at 1407 Heafer Road, in collaboration with First Baptist Church of Anchorage and its youth-enrichment program in historic Berrytown.

Through hands-on gardening, garden-to-table cooking, and nutrition education, campers will experience the complete food cycle—from planting and harvesting to preparing healthy meals. Guided by a 4-H Youth Workforce Development model, they will also explore their interests, sense of purpose, and potential career pathways.

Campers will:

• Grow and prepare fresh food
• Learn about nutrition, soil, water, and conservation
• Explore agriculture, STEAM, and related careers
• Build leadership, teamwork, and practical skills
• Participate in field trips and hands-on demonstrations

AgriPrint Circular STEAM Lab

A signature component of the Summer Camp will be the AgriPrint Circular STEAM Lab. Through its Bottles-to-Garden-Tools Initiative, campers will learn about recycling, plastic-waste reduction, computer-aided design, and 3D printing while transforming discarded plastic bottles into useful tools for Berrytown’s gardens.

Guided by graduate students from a local university, campers will identify real needs in Berrytown’s gardens and learn to design, test, and refine solutions. Projects may include plant markers, seed-spacing guides, irrigation components, sensor housings, educational signs, and other useful garden tools.

In the process, young people will learn more than how to use technology. They will learn how to identify a community problem, develop a solution, test their ideas, and improve their designs—building skills in innovation, teamwork, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship.

The program will be offered in collaboration with community and corporate partners.
