Saving Lives One Animal at a Time

Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) supports the lost and abandoned community animals that come through the doors of Louisville Metro Animal Services (MAS). Every year, the shelter races against overpopulation and ever-increasing numbers. So far in 2026, the shelter has helped over 6,000 animals in need across the community. There are hundreds upon hundreds of community members who work tirelessly in collaboration with shelter staff to make sure these amazing animals find their furever home. And you too can be the change you wish to see in this world!

For Give for Good Louisville, FOMAS' goal is to raise $25,000 to support FOMAS programs like Return to Owner, Pay It Forward, and the Champions program, while also supporting the needs of each department at Metro Animal Services.

Waived Redemption Fees – When the shelter is full, FOMAS covers the cost of the redemption fees for owners who are reclaiming their pets. This allows owners to be reunited with their pets without the burden of additional costs.

Pay It Forward – Pay It Forward covers the adoption fees for cats older than 6 months, large breed dogs weighing 40 lbs. or more, and senior shelter pets.

Champions Program – Adoption fees are covered by FOMAS for Champions (i.e., dogs that have been at the shelter for 45 days or longer). Adopters also receive a free VIP package valued at over $500. The VIP Package includes items such as: Core Vaccinations (3 years); Jefferson County Pet License (3-Year); Heartworm Preventative (6 months); a Freedom Harness with a Leash; a bag of starter food; and a large crate (upon request).

MAS is just a fraction of an animal’s journey. The staff, volunteers, and fosters provide as much care as possible to show each animal that there’s more to life than sitting in a kennel as they wait for their furever family. Every donation, no matter how small, instills a sense of hope and belonging for each animal. Lachesis (A80071)

Lachesis came into the shelter in critical condition. She had two very injured eyes that had to be removed surgically for her well-being. She also tested positive for FeLV, Feline Leukemia Virus. Despite all the hardships she's faced at a young age, she is still an extremely sweet cat. Losing her eyesight did not dampen her confidence. She played and cuddled like any other cat.

Unfortunately, due to her FeLV diagnosis, she was unable to be housed with other cats for the risk of transmitting it to them. When she's with trusted friends, she really flourishes. Lachesis found sanctuary at Froggie’s Pond Rescue, where she can be with cats just like her. Froggie’s Pond Rescue is a nonprofit animal sanctuary in Battle Creek, MI. They specialize in taking care of cats who are FeLV- and FIV- positive.

Lachesis’ story didn’t have to end at the shelter, and it didn’t. Although she did not have much success getting adopted, MAS found a place where she could live out her life with other cats deserving of love. The staff at MAS are dedicated to creating happily-ever-afters for as many animals as possible. Sometimes, it’s being in a foster home while they wait for their furever families. Other times, it’s finding the right placement for them outside of the shelter.
