Coalition for the Homeless

For 40 years, the Coalition for the Homeless has worked to prevent and end homelessness in Louisville through advocacy, education, and collaboration.

Since our founding in 1986, we’ve brought together more than 40 local agencies, community partners, elected leaders, and thousands of Louisvillians to move people from homelessness to housing. We believe that everyone deserves a safe place to call home, and after four decades of this work, we know that when we work together, we can make a difference.

40 years of impact

A quick glance at some highlights of our impact over the past 40 years:

• 40+ member agencies working together to prevent and end homelessness
• Up to $24.5 million in federal, state, and local funding coordinated annually to support these amazing agencies and their services
• 95,860 clients served through our community's homelessness response system since 2000
• Thousands of Louisvillians housed through programs that connect people with housing and the services they need to remain there

We know what works

• Housing with supportive services works. Today in Louisville, 3,219 people are living in permanent housing, with a 98% success rate for remaining housed.
• Shelter matters. Emergency shelter provides a safe place to stay, meets basic needs, and keeps people from having to sleep on our streets while longer-term solutions are found.
• Targeted, collaborative efforts work. When our community comes together around a shared goal, we can make significant progress for people experiencing homelessness, including chronically homeless individuals, veterans, families, and young adults.

Our collaboration is producing results

• Our Coordinated Shelter Access team annually serves more than 4,750 people in crisis, helping them access shelter and other critical resources.
• We recently launched Home for Good, a community-wide effort to expand Permanent Supportive Housing and significantly reduce street homelessness, beginning with $500,000 in city funding.
• This past year, we hosted 35 community education events reaching more than 2,000 people, helping our community better understand the causes of homelessness and the solutions that work.
• We were awarded $5 million from the Day 1 Families Fund, which we are currently distributing to 10 local nonprofits working to prevent and address family homelessness.

After 40 years, we’re still fighting together. We’re grateful for the collaboration that has made these successes possible. We’re grateful for the people who continue to stand together against the injustices that leave people without a home.

And we’re hopeful that 40 years from now, Louisville will no longer need the Coalition for the Homeless. But if we do, we’ll be here, ready to fight for a community where everyone has a safe place to call home.
