The Black Appraisers of Louisville is dedicated to transforming the appraisal profession by cultivating the next generation of minority appraisers while creating pathways for Black appraisers to enter, thrive, and lead. We believe representation in the workforce is a fundamental lever for building wealth in Black communities through higher home valuations, fairer lending, and intergenerational asset growth.
Why this work matters:
As of 2023–24, the certified real estate appraiser occupation is 94.7% white and only 0.6% Black, making it the least racially diverse occupation among hundreds surveyed.
Homes in majority Black neighborhoods are systematically undervalued compared to similar homes in white neighborhoods by an average of 21–23%, even after adjusting for home and neighborhood characteristics.
This undervaluation contributes directly to large-scale losses in housing equity, wealth that could otherwise be passed on through generations.
What we do:
We provide scholarships, training, mentorship, financial aid for appraisal courses, and opportunities to help Black individuals meet the education and experience requirements to become certified residential real estate appraisers.
We work to expand and clarify career pathways, so more people from underserved backgrounds can get licensed without needing exclusive personal or professional networks. Our support and guidance helps aspiring minority appraisers navigate through the many barriers created within the appraisal industry profession.
We advocate for industry reforms to reduce bias in appraisals, which helps communities retain more of their home equity, enabling stronger asset building and wealth transfer to future generations creating more generational wealth!
With your support, The Black Appraisers of Louisville don’t just change individual lives we help strengthen families, protect community wealth, and move toward a more equitable housing market for all.
