Born during the height of the 1980s–90s drug epidemic, founder April Simmons experienced many of the same struggles today’s youth face—violence, instability, and eroding core values. In response, she birthed Blossoms of Hope in 2013 and officially launched it in 2021 as a bridge of hope and catalyst for change.
Blossoms of Hope is a Louisville-based nonprofit committed to combating food insecurity and empowering youth through tutoring, mentoring, and life‑skills training rooted in integrity, respect, and perseverance.
Louisville youth violence by the numbers:
Youth homicides among ages 15–24 tripled from 20 in 2018 to 60 in 2021, with 48 of those victims young Black men (wdrb.com).
In 2021, though youth (15–24) made up only 12% of the population, they accounted for 50% of homicides committed and 30% of victims (greaterlouisvilleproject.github.io).
In 2024, there were 14 homicides among ages 11–17, up from 12 in 2023; in 2025 there have been 10 youth homicides, just one fewer than last year. Nonfatal shootings dropped from 44 to 33 victims year‑over‑year (wdrb.com).
These numbers reflect an urgent need for early intervention, community support, and value-based mentorship.
Blossoms of Hope intends to fill that gap by offering consistent guidance and positive role models, helping youth heal from trauma and avoid cycles of violence. Your donation will help us to fund another school year for our students.
Rooted in survivor-led advocacy, Blossoms of Hope is more than a service—it’s a transformative presence nurturing young lives toward flourishing futures and restoring hope one life at a time.
Support Blossoms of Hope Kentucky—your donation empowers lives, restores hope, and builds stronger communities through education, advocacy, and care. Give today and make lasting change possible!"
