Louisville Outreach for the Unsheltered Inc

At Louisville Outreach for the Unsheltered, our mission is to promote compassion. We build meaningful relationships and provide life-affirming support to individuals experiencing homelessness in our community. We are committed to serving our neighbors and participants without judgment or condition, recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every person.

Through consistent and compassionate outreach, we seek to cultivate trust and human connection, meeting individuals where they are, both physically and emotionally. Our approach is deeply relational, focused not only on addressing immediate needs but also on fostering long-term hope and healing.

Our weekly, volunteer-driven outreach provided over 35,000 meals and thousands of supplies (clothing, hygiene products, blankets, etc.) to our unsheltered neighbors in 2025.

This past year at Louisville Outreach for the Unsheltered, our work has grown from meeting people where they are on the streets to include creating a place where essential services can meet them under one roof. At our 1801 Resource Center in Portland, individuals experiencing homelessness can access showers and hygiene supplies, receive mail, safely store vital documents, and get hands-on assistance obtaining IDs, birth certificates, benefits, shelter, treatment, and housing resources. Our new shower program has become an important point of connection, often opening the door to conversations about health, housing, treatment, and other needs. By regularly welcoming providers such as Solutions Health, Phoenix Family Health Center's Mobile Unit, Common Assessment, Seven Counties Services, Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition, Kynectors, and other community organizations into 1801, we make it easier for participants to connect directly with medical care, mental health and substance use services, benefits, housing navigation, and other resources without having to navigate those systems alone.

Our work with families experiencing homelessness has also expanded significantly through the Day 1 Families Fund, administered locally by the Coalition for the Homeless. Building on our first year of providing hotel stays and individualized support to families awaiting shelter, our increased allocation this year allows us to assist more families and provide more sustained support as they work toward stability. That means helping families remain safely housed while awaiting shelter, addressing transportation and school needs, obtaining identification and other documents, connecting to benefits and community resources, and removing practical barriers that can stand between a family and permanent housing. Together, our work at 1801, with families, and on the streets reflects the role LOU has developed in Louisville: meeting immediate needs while building relationships, connecting people to the broader network of services available in our community, and staying alongside them as they move toward greater stability.
