More Than A Smile Foundation

Every smile tells a story. And sometimes, the biggest smiles carry the stories we never see.

Behind the smiles of the young people and families we serve are stories of resilience, sacrifice, displacement, and hope.

Many families in our community are working incredibly hard while navigating barriers that make even everyday life more difficult. A parent may be learning English while trying to understand a child's school system. A family may have food on the table today but not know how they will afford groceries next week. A teenager may spend the afternoon translating an important document for a parent before sitting down to finish their own homework.

Nearly every family we serve lives below the poverty line, and 100% of the youth we serve are first- or second-generation immigrants or refugees.

For some young people, childhood comes with responsibilities their classmates may never see.

They translate for their parents. They help care for younger siblings. They learn to navigate two cultures at once. They carry their family's hopes while still trying to understand their own identity, dreams, and place in the world.

And yet, when we meet these young people, we don't see a list of needs.

We see leaders. Artists. Athletes. Students. Big sisters and brothers. Dreamers. Young people filled with ideas, talent, humor, culture, and possibility.

The challenge is not a lack of potential.

It is a lack of equitable access to the opportunities, relationships, resources, and spaces that allow that potential to grow.

We don't ask families to fit into a box before they can belong here.

At More Than A Smile Foundation, we meet people where they are .... sometimes literally.

You may find us on a soccer field encouraging a young athlete, sitting beside a parent trying to understand an unfamiliar system, helping a student find an opportunity, gathering families around a meal, or walking directly into neighborhoods through our mobile community-based approach.

We believe meaningful change starts with relationships.

That is why our work goes beyond providing a service. We build trust, listen first, and work alongside young people and families to create opportunities that reflect what they actually need and want.

Through mentorship, education, sports, wellness, leadership development, family support, cultural connection, and basic-needs assistance, we create multiple doors into one community of support.

A child who first meets us on the soccer field may eventually become a youth leader.

A mother who comes looking for help may later become the person helping another family.

A teenager who once sat quietly in the room may eventually be the one holding the microphone.

That is what community looks like to us.

Today, we serve more than 200 families each year alongside a growing network of youth leaders, parents, mentors, volunteers, partners, and community champions.

We are not here to "fix" communities.

We are here to make sure the people closest to the challenges have the resources, relationships, and opportunities to lead the change.

Our Story

More Than A Smile started before it had a name, an office, or a nonprofit status.

It started with one mother, a family-owned corner store, and a simple belief that no young person should have to navigate life alone.

Our founder, Amina Shale, came to the United States as a Somali Bantu refugee. Growing up, she knew what it meant to be the child translating for family, learning unfamiliar systems, balancing cultures, and trying to find opportunity when there was no clear roadmap showing where to begin.

Years later, she began helping young people facing some of those same barriers.

There was no large grant.

There was no polished program.

There were simply young people who needed support and someone willing to show up.

What began as volunteer tutoring inside her family's corner store grew one relationship at a time.

One child became several.

Families told other families.

Needs extended beyond homework, and the community responded.

That small effort eventually became More Than A Smile Foundation; a community-led organization built around a lesson we learned long before we became a nonprofit:

Sometimes people don't need another system to navigate. They need someone willing to walk beside them.

We exist for the young person who needs someone to recognize their potential.

For the parent trying to build a future for their children while navigating an unfamiliar system.

For the family looking for one resource and discovering an entire community standing beside them.

And for the young person whose biggest dream simply needs someone to say, "We believe you can."

Because behind every smile is more than a story of where someone has been.

There is a story of where they can go next.
