During this political moment, our social justice movements face the biggest threats of our lifetimes - global rising fascism and the climate crisis. Despite mass mobilizations and actions , investments in the “green economy”, and a growing interest in leftist politics, we have not secured a future that guarantees our collective survival.  In 2024, our Earth has surpassed 1.5 degrees Celsius, a marker that climate scientists and advocates have dubbed “a warning to humanity”. We’ve also witnessed significant rollbacks in land and water protections, federal disaster aid, and basic human rights. It’s become increasingly clear that give our circumstances, there are collective struggles ahead that will require significant unity, coordination and community power to weather the storm.

Our network leadership consists of young, black and Latino leaders who have been directly impacted or displaced by climate disaster, who have been victims of systemic abuse and violence. We see this moment as an opportunity to transform and reimagine strategies for our collective survival. This means innovating the ways that communities across socio-economic backgrounds come together to meet their material needs, preserve and protect our minds, bodies, and land through ongoing crises, and build the capacity for mass political action for systemic transformation.

Founded in 2023, Survival Bloc is a national BIPOC-led climate survival network that is building movement infrastructure to survive the climate crisis. Together, with a growing coalition of 30+ organizations, business cooperatives, and leaders across the U.S , we are designing and organizing survival programs, leadership and climate resilient trainings, and forging strategies to cripple the fossil fuel industry and build disaster resilience.

Our volunteer-led network team has managed to accomplish some of the following over the past year or so:

  • Activated 500+ individuals across the U.S around climate survival through webinars, workshops, zines/educational materials. etc.
  • Co-developed grassroots organizing fellowship program with Start Empowerment, training 40+ Black and Latinx leaders in Texas and New York City
  • Work in partnership with The Highlander Center and Mutual Aid Disaster Relief Network to develop off-grid radio communications infrastructure throughout the South and Puerto Rico, supporting frontline communities in case of power outages post-disaster

In early 2025, Survival Bloc officially formed our first hub/chapter in Kentucky, with majority black and brown leaders and organizations (ie: The Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition, West End Women's Collaborative, REACT and more) from Louisville, Hopkinsville, Lexington, and Whitesburg.

Your contribution would help significantly grow the organizing capacity for our work in Louisville in these key areas:

  • Leadership Development + Climate Resilience Education - We are committed to using our cross-movement ties to deliver workshops and trainings on neighborhood safety, disaster preparedness, and practices that help fortify our environments from incoming disasters and political crises
  • Art + Cultural Organizing - We see the importance of using art, music, and other mediums to cultivate community connections, bridge divides, and communicate climate concerns that may be confusing or distant worries for some communities. By investing in this strategy, we aim to root our movement in joy, place-based healing, and cultural revival.
  • Neighborhood-led Projects for Care, Resilience, and Defense - Our network exists in part to connect impacted communities with training, resources, and support with developing their own projects for community resiliency and disaster collectivism. We are currently stewarding the development of multiple community-led programs, including The Grow Room, a Louisville-based open-source garden aimed at expanding food and medicine access for marginalized communities
