We defend the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all by the U.S. and Kentucky constitutions. The American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky (ACLU) also fights to extend rights to people who are often denied them. Our diverse team supports this mission working in courts, legislatures and communities.
Some of our key focus areas include:
The ACLU of Kentucky was founded in 1955 when Jim Crow was the law of the land. The organization started by tackling racial discrimination. Racial justice remains central to our mission. Learn more about our history here.
We lobby local and state legislatures and support grassroots movements throughout the state. Our team partners with other civil rights groups and advocates. The ACLU dedicates itself to empowering all people to engage in this process.
Our Commonwealth is in a time of unprecedented attacks on civil liberties. We must unite, lift each other's voices, and fight back. Together, we can create a more perfect union.
Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to learn about how you can get involved and to stay up to date with civil liberties issues in KY.
The ACLU of Kentucky has a long and distinguished history of successfully advocating for Kentuckians’ civil rights and civil liberties in state and federal courts, including before the U.S. Supreme Court.
For decades, the ACLU of Kentucky has defended Kentuckians by providing volunteer lawyers to those whose civil liberties were denied by the state or federal governments.
People across the commonwealth are coming together to stand up for what they believe is right.
Take your stand—help us as we:
-Defend free speech and the right to protest
-Fight relentless attacks on reproductive freedom
-Reform our racially-biased criminal legal system
