Somewhere in Louisville this week, a neighbor from East Africa drove to an appointment on their own for the first time. Gate of Hope made that possible, and it is one of six things happening right now for families across this city. On September 10, 2026, every dollar you give through Give for Good Louisville is matched dollar for dollar until the match pool is exhausted. Gate of Hope has been present for East African families in Louisville since 2003, serving in six languages, and we are an ECFA accredited 501(c)(3) organization (EIN 26-0281018).

Our Story Began with Survival and Grew into a Mission of Belonging

Gate of Hope was born in response to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Survivors gathered to pray, heal, and support each other. From that sacred circle of courage, a movement began.

Gate of Hope was founded in 1995. In 2003, we expanded our work to Louisville, Kentucky, where we now serve a vibrant community of refugee and immigrant families from Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, in six languages and through six programs, with staff who carry a deep understanding of what this journey requires.

Our Mission: Encourage. Empower. Educate.

We believe lasting change begins with relationships; showing up consistently, in the right language, for as long as it takes. Our mission is grounded in three commitments:

Encouragement: Culturally grounded community care, peer support, and a place where neighbors are known by name, not by case number.

Empowerment: Skill-building, economic support, parenting education, and leadership development that puts tools in people’s hands.

Education: Language learning, youth mentorship, academic engagement, and faith formation that carries across generations.

We serve in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, French, Kirundi, Kinyamulenge, and English because dignity begins with being heard in the language you think in.

What Makes GHMI Different?

We are community-rooted: Many of our staff are former refugees or immigrants themselves

What Your Gift Supports

This Give for Good Louisville, we are raising $25,000 for our Louisville programs:

Gosheni ("the healing place"): A 19-acre working farm in southwest Louisville where neighbors grow food they recognize, build community, and reconnect with the land.

Humura ("to comfort"): A women’s health and support circle, gathering regularly for peer support, community care, and a space where women are known by name.

Tabara ("to rescue"): Trauma counseling and mentorship for young women, walking alongside them through the hardest moments and over time.

Integrating New Neighbors (INN): Language support, driver’s education, tutoring, and a computer lab, alongside a clothes closet and the kind of steady presence that answers the phone when a letter arrives that no one in the house can read.

Himbaza ("to praise"):  GHMI’s children’s music and faith program, where young people learn to sing, to lead, and to carry their tradition forward.
