Rooted in Hope. Growing Together.
Gate of Hope Ministries International (Gate of Hope) is a nonprofit based in Louisville, Kentucky, serving East African refugees and immigrant families through holistic, culturally grounded, and trauma-informed care.
We exist to support our newest neighbors as they rebuild their lives after displacement, war, and deep loss helping them find healing, community, and hope.
Our Story Began with Survival and Grew into a Mission of Belonging
Gate of Hope was born in response to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Survivors gathered to pray, heal, and support each other. From that sacred circle of courage, a movement began.
Since 1995, Gate of Hope has grown to support thousands of individuals and families across East Africa and right here in Louisville. Our founders carry a deep understanding of what it means to flee, survive, and begin again.
In 2003, we expanded our work to Louisville, Kentucky, where we now serve a vibrant community of refugee and immigrant families from Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Our Mission: Encourage. Empower. Educate.
We believe that healing doesn’t start with systems, it starts with relationships. That’s why our mission is grounded in:
Encouragement: Culturally relevant mental health support, trauma healing, and community care
Empowerment: Skill-building, economic support, parenting education, and leadership development
Education: ESL, youth mentorship, intergenerational worship support, and academic engagement
Through more than 21 programs, we meet people where they are, in the languages they speak, and with deep respect for the culture and strength they carry.
What Makes GHMI Different?
We are community-rooted: Many of our staff are former refugees or immigrants themselves
We serve in-language: Swahili, Kinyarwanda, French, Kirundi, Kinyamulenge, and more
We walk with, not ahead: Our case managers, farmers, and educators are companions first
We believe in dignity: Every program restores a sense of voice, agency, and value
