Help Grandparents Creating Lasting Memories in Their New Home

At Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville, we were founded on the conviction that everyone deserves a decent place to live. And during these challenging times, we've all seen the importance and impact of living in a stable, safe and affordable home. We believe in the power of home and it's why we work diligently to serve our homebuyer families who seek to achieve the security that homeownership provides. 

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to sponsor a home for a grandmother like Marilyn. Marilyn is the mother of three daughters, grandmother of sixteen, and a great-grandmother of five. She currently lives in a one-bedroom apartment in New Albany and longs for more space so her family can come stay with her more. However, her grandchildren are not picky. They tell her “Granny, I will make a pallet on the floor if I have to, I just want to stay with you”. How can that not make your heart smile?

The bond between children and their grandparents is special. Grandparents provide acceptance, patience, love, stability, wisdom, fun and support to their grandchildren. This, in turn, has positive effects on a child’s well-being.They can pass on important family traditions and life stories that a grandchild will grow to appreciate more over time. Susan Bosak, author of How To Build The Grandma Connection, says children who have strong ties with involved, caring grandparents develop higher self-esteem, better emotional stability, stronger social skills, the ability to withstand peer pressure, and enhanced academic performance.

Moments spent at grandparents’ house create lifelong memories for children, but also help strengthen the bond with their cousins. The strongest commonality that first cousins share is the love for their grandparents. Through the common interest of spending time at their grandparents, they are also getting to spend time with one another. A grandparent’s home is the catalyst for the closeness of the next generation. With your gifts, you are helping a grandmother like Marilyn fulfill her homeownership dream, but you are providing a safe space for the next generation to grow up together and keep family traditions alive.

The first thing Marilyn plans to do in her new home is host a big family dinner. She cannot wait to throw something on the grill. Her grandchildren are so excited for this new home! One of her grandsons wants to come help build her home. He's too young to be on a construction site but he told her, "Granny, I can carry a brick!"
