Our mission

LAS works to conserve and restore natural ecosystems and protect Earth’s biodiversity for the benefit of birds and other wildlife—as well as for us humans. 

Our efforts

Our past and current conservation advocacy, education, and outreach efforts and initiatives include:   

• Lights Out Louisville, our program to educate legislators, businesses, and the public about how they can prevent building/window collisions—which kill billions of birds each year  
• Louisville's first bird-collision monitoring program to collect localized data for researchers on birds killed or injured due to building and window collisions
• our annual Grants Program, which helps fund conservation projects such as pollinator gardens and local raptor rehabilitation facility construction 
• educational and recreational programs, including birding field trips to local parks and virtual and in-person talks and presentations across Jefferson County and beyond
• outreach and advocacy work focused on public policymakers—which resulted in Lights Out Louisville’s partnership with Louisville Metro Government (announced April 2026)—as well as private enterprise, including work to  educate building operators about light pollution’s harmful affects on migrating birds 
• NEW as of Aug. 2026: a bird research project with JCPS high schools—and plans for future expansion
