The mission of Somali Community of Louisville is to provide consistently excellent and accessible community services to all Somalis in Kentucky, regardless of immigration status. These help Somalis in Kentucky, to obtain the basic resources, services, information and skills needed to build productive and self-sufficient lives in a new land. While strengthening the Somali community by promoting mutual  assistance, cultural identity and leadership, SCL fosters the ability of Somali individuals and families to advocate on their own behalf and participate constructively in the larger community.

Art performances

Art changes everything. It is used as a means to create political and social change around the world. SCL arts program - poetry, music, theater, storytelling, painting, sculpture and more - creates an intimate space to motivate, empower, and elevate.

Education

We help Somali students catch up, keep up, and get ahead. SCL works hand in hand with the city of Louisville and the Jefferson County Job and Family Services in many ways, especially in the afterschool programs and adult ESL classes, Working Adult, Preschool and After-School Classes.

Job placement

Our employment programs and services create economic opportunity for Somalis in Louisville. We help young people build resumes, apply for jobs, and prepare for interviews. Our wraparound services improve job retention. Volunteering: Our volunteers serve as tutors, drivers, teachers, and community activists. Volunteering is a core value of American culture.

Social services

Family needs: We provide financial aid, transportation, upgrades to family life and supports for other concerns unique to each Somali. Counseling on family and youth issues are also provided by Somali Family Service to the Somali refugee community. We assist those dealing with difficulties in adjusting to their new life in the U.S. and we direct them to the right resources in the community.

Immigration Services

We provide free cost immigration services to our community such as green card applications, citizenship applications, citizenship interview classes and new immigration policy services.

Somali Community of Louisville Inc. is 501(c) (3) nonprofit status. We have worked with various professional groups to begin. Since its founding in 1998 the SCL has been a leading voice for Somalians in Louisville and working very closely with Louisville Metro Police Department, Office of Globalization, Kentucky youth works, Muslim Americans for Compassion, Iroquois library, Buckner ymca sports arena, Catholic Charities, Jefferson County Public schools, Somali business owners, Amazon, Integrity Staffing, Global Human Project and Kentucky Refugee Ministries. According to Abanur Saidi the resettlement manager in Catholic charities stated that Somali population is 10,000-12,000 here in Louisville and more immigrants are coming every month. The number of Somalis in Louisville continues to grow by 3-7% annually. Other immigrant communities settling in Louisville face many challenges relative to drugs, violence, housing, employment, education, and healthcare. SCL will continue to provide ongoing support.
