Founded in 1853, St. Vincent de Paul Louisville's mission is to house, feed, and support those in need with compassion and dignity. Today, SVDP is a broadly supported social services campus that provides quality programs and services to meet the needs of individuals and families in need - those unhoused, hungry, or overwhelmed by life and in need of various kinds of support.

Kentucky has the fourth highest rate of food insecurity among older adults in the US, according to the latest "State of Senior Hunger" data from Feeding America. This study found that 6.9% of Kentucky seniors and 14.6% of adults aged 50 to 59 lack regular access to enough food or had to make trade-offs between food and other basic needs. It is estimated that 579,770 Kentuckians struggle with food insecurity.

In the Louisville community, around 16% of children are food insecure, and almost 12% of Jefferson County's total population lacks consistent access to nutritional food according to Dare to Care. Families are still dealing with the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. In April, the extra Temporary Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits implemented during the pandemic ended, leaving many families struggling.

In order to fight food insecurity for clients we serve on campus and across Louisville, SVDP operates a commercial feeding kitchen (Open Hand Kitchen) 365 days per year in the Shelby Park neighborhood. The Open Hand Kitchen is open to the public for lunch and dinner, and provides more than 11,000+ meals per month to those experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Since May 2022, we have seen a 44% increase in number of meals served per month.

In addition to our Open Hand Kitchen, we operate a Food Pantry on campus to provide fresh produce, meat and pantry staples to 650+ households monthly. The pantry operates Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-noon and is open to the public.

This year, as we celebrate the 10th Annual Give for Good Louisville, we're asking YOU to help us combat hunger and food insecurity in our community. Your support allows us to continue our mission to house, feed, and support those in need with compassion and dignity.

We are proud of the strides St. Vincent de Paul Louisville is making in our 170-year mission of service to the poor and underprivileged. We truly appreciate and value your loyal support and generosity. On behalf of the men, women, and children whose lives have been touched by your kindness and compassion, we thank you!
