We’ve believed in recovery since 1963.

In 1963, Bill Wallace saw men caught in a revolving door: arrested for alcohol-related offenses, incarcerated, released, and returned to the same streets and circumstances they had left.

He believed they deserved a real chance to break the cycle.

Wallace began vouching for men in jail and bringing them to Alcoholics Anonymous. But he soon realized that meetings alone weren’t enough. People need a safe place to live. They need community and accountability. And they need people to believe in them when they do not yet believe in themselves.

So Wallace and twelve members of Alcoholics Anonymous created that place.

More than 60 years later, thanks to people like you, Talbot House is still here. We are proud to be among the oldest recovery houses in the United States, a testament to this community and the thousands of men who have rebuilt their lives here.

Today, our three Louisville homes give men the time, stability, and community they need to rebuild their lives. As they progress through Talbot House, Wallace House, and Jim Hoard House, structure gradually gives way to independence until they are ready to live on their own.

Our approach remains remarkably similar to the one that began in 1963. Bill Wallace was ahead of his time. Six decades later, we know we cannot arrest our way out of addiction, nor can treatment alone provide everything a person needs to build a new life. Lasting recovery is built through relationships, accountability, hope, and a foundation of life skills.
