Alicia Bloos's We Are the Safety Net Fundraiser

Ever since my church, Bardstown Road Presbyterian, helped encourage the founding of Highlands Community Ministries in 1970, I have felt a connection with HCM and its ministries. My church has always participated in food drives, Christmas baskets, Back to School drives, and has helped care for the folks in the Highlands. Many of us give to many causes, but this one is special because it benefits neighbors right here in our community. I have been an active member of our church Mission Committee for many years, and have served on HCM boards and committees and spent many hours helping with HCM fundraisers. I always have a sense that the benefits HCM provides the community are priceless, but there are costs. This is where YOU come in.

We Are the Safety Net

When larger systems fall short, neighbors step forward.

Across Louisville, more of our neighbors are facing impossible choices. Older adults are waiting for meals. Families are struggling to keep up with rent, utilities, and groceries. Public support is becoming less certain at the very moment local need is growing.

At Highlands Community Ministries, we believe a safety net is not just a program or a policy. It is people.

It is the volunteer delivering meals to an older adult who lives alone. It is the donor who helps a family stay housed after an unexpected crisis. It is the neighbor who makes sure the pantry shelves are stocked. It is the community that says, “You are not alone.”

One of the stories guiding us this year is the story of Florence, a 95-year-old neighbor served through Meals on Wheels. For Florence, this program was never just about food. It was about dignity, consistency, relationship, and being known by name. Her story reminds us that no neighbor should disappear into a waiting list, a budget cut, or a system that has grown too thin to hold them.
