Long before I ever had a title in youth ministry, before I worked with young people professionally, and before I understood what it meant to spend your life investing in the next generation, I was a young person who needed someone to show up for me.
At 17 years old, my life was headed in a very different direction.
Then Jesus met me.
And one of the ways He changed the trajectory of my life was through people connected to this ministry—people who didn’t just tell me what I should become. They came close enough to know me.
They gave me their time.
They let me into their lives.
They challenged me.
They discipled me.
They showed me what following Jesus could actually look like. I couldn’t have known then that years later, I would find myself trying to offer that same kind of presence to another generation of young people.
But that’s exactly what I get to do today in West Louisville through City Life.
And if you spend enough time around our young people, you’ll quickly discover something:
There is no shortage of potential in West Louisville. There is creativity here. Intelligence. Humor. Leadership. Resilience. Faith. Dreams. Young people with gifts that haven’t even been discovered yet.
What is often in short supply are consistent adults willing to enter their world, build trust, stay long enough to know their story, and remind them that their lives matter.
That’s where City Life comes in.
Relationships happen in ordinary places. Over food. In a car ride. After school. During a conversation nobody planned.
When a teenager finally trusts you enough to tell you what’s really happening. When someone asks a question about God they’ve been carrying for months. When you celebrate something everyone else overlooked. When life gets messy—and instead of disappearing, you stay.
That’s City Life.
We believe discipleship is deeply relational. We want young people to encounter Jesus, but we also understand that relationship creates the space where many of those conversations begin.
So we keep showing up.
Why This Is Personal for Me
There’s something full-circle about this season of my life.
I can look across a room filled with teenagers and remember that I was once the kid somebody decided was worth their time. Someone invested in me without knowing what the return would be. They couldn’t see the next 20 years. They didn’t know where my life would take me. They simply showed up. And God used it.
That’s why this isn’t simply another fundraiser for me. It’s an opportunity to give back to the ministry that helped change my life while investing in young people growing up right here in our city.
83 People. One Bigger Story. For Give for Good Louisville, I’m working toward a very specific goal:
83 individual people giving in honor of Youth for Christ’s Louisville roots dating back to 1983. Notice I said people, not dollars. I’m not trying to convince 83 people to make huge donations. I’m asking 83 people to participate.
Maybe your gift is $5.
Maybe it’s $25.
Maybe it’s $100 or more.
Every gift moves that number from 83 to 82 to 81—until, hopefully, we reach zero. But behind that number is something much bigger.
It’s 83 people saying:
I believe young people in West Louisville are worth investing in.
I believe relationships matter.
I believe showing up matters.
I believe the next generation deserves people who see who they can become—not just the circumstances they’re growing up in. And for those who share our faith, it’s also a declaration that we believe Jesus is still changing lives. I know He is.He changed mine. Will You Be One of the 83?
There are young people in West Louisville right now who have no idea where their story will eventually take them. Neither did I at 17. That’s part of what makes this work so beautiful.
You rarely know which conversation will matter. You don’t know which night in the gym they’ll remember. You don’t know which prayer will stick with them. You don’t know what God might do with a young person’s life when somebody consistently reminds them:
You matter.
You belong.
You have a future.
And Jesus hasn’t forgotten you.
Twenty-plus years ago, people made that investment in me.Today, I get to make it in someone else. And this Give for Good, I’m inviting 83 people to make it with me.
Will you be one of them?
For the West. For the Next Generation.
