When school dismisses on Friday, many children face the weekend without enough to eat. More than 2 out of 5 NAFCS students are experiencing food insecurity, and Blessings in a Backpack Floyd County ensures that students in need don’t go hungry over the weekend and can return to school ready to learn.
As an official partner, the NAFC Education Foundation helps ensure that children who rely on free and reduced lunch during the week don't go hungry when school is closed. About 15% of NAFCS pre-K through 8th grade students are currently enrolled in the program, and that number keeps growing.
Program Highlights:
Serves almost 2,000 students each week
Provides food at all 12 NAFC elementary and middle schools (pre-K–8th grade)
Operates as a completely self-funded program
100% of donations go directly toward purchasing food
Every Friday, students in the program take home a bag of food that needs little to no preparation, so they're fed and ready to learn again on Monday. Kids in the program report feeling more cared for by their community, doing better in school, and having an easier time learning.
