The United States is experiencing a Literacy Crisis. Approximately 40% of students across the nation cannot read at a basic level. Struggling to read does not just affect children in the classroom, it affects their social-emotional learning and access to opportunity. This struggle continues as they become adults.
The ability to read and write is an essential life skill. Decode Project works to help more children achieve literacy.
We equip decoders with the tools needed for success. We do this by tailoring each and every session to the decoder’s learning style, personality, pace, and curriculum level. Aside from structured literacy, decoders also work on social-emotional learning, another tool needed for success.
As a Literacy Mentor, witnessing children learn to read while building their self-esteem, self-efficacy, and intrinsic motivation is endlessly fulfilling.
I invite you to consider giving to Decode Project. We are always in need of funds. Funds that will provide and maintain learning spaces, materials, resources, staff, everything needed to give more children the gift of literacy.
I have worked at Decode Project for two years. I’ve seen this organization grow out of small offices into larger sites. I’ve seen firsthand just how much our reach can expand thanks to donations. Your contribution actively supports children’s access to education.
I leave you with a few statistics* to help understand just how important literacy is.
- Approximately 40% of students across the nation cannot read at a basic level.
- Almost 70% of low-income fourth grade students cannot read at a basic level.
- Approximately 50% of Americans read so poorly that they are unable to perform simple tasks like reading prescription drug labels
- 44% of the American adults do not read a book in a year
- 3 out of 5 people in American prisons can’t read
- 85% of juvenile offenders have problems reading
