Our connection to Elmgrove began just over a year ago...
One sunny spring day, our family attended a playgroup at the Trailhouse. We didn't know what to expect except that we'd meet up with kids Libby's age who are also neurodivergent. That day, Libby and our family were connected to a community of caring, empathetic individuals who understand each other on a level seldom encountered in everyday life.
For us, Sunday playgroups grew into a summer potions camp and then affirming therapy where Libby's language and self-expression blossomed. Her sense of joy and safety grew from a space that met her where she was and celebrated the humorous child who has a flair for the macabre! Where else can a child have a funeral for a daddy-long-legs? See photo below of the tasteful ceremony.
While Libby gets to have fun exploring the natural environment and engage with same aged peers, Greg and I get to connect with other parents and caregivers by sharing our stories. Through that connection, we have a clearer vision of how Libby's future could progress with like-minded families who freely share their experiences without judgement. We feel supported, and through that support, navigating a world that is not set up to accept autistic folks, like Libby, feels a little less daunting.
I’m helping raise funds to move Elmgrove's vision forward. I invite you to learn more about why Elmgrove matters to me and, if you feel connected to this work, to help us build what comes next. Please explore my page as well as the pages of fellow family members to understand why Elmgrove's mission is so vital to a connected and empathetic future for Louisville.
______________________________________________________________
Elmgrove is a Louisville-based nonprofit working to create a community where neurodivergent people and their families can feel understood, supported, and genuinely connected.
Born from the lived experience of neurodivergent people, families, and clinicians, Elmgrove is building something different: affirming therapy and family support, education and training, advocacy, financial assistance, and opportunities for meaningful community—all grounded in dignity, autonomy, and an understanding of different nervous systems.
Right now, one of our biggest goals is creating a permanent home where this work can grow and expand access to:
- Affirming therapy
- Education and training
- Community programs
- Advocacy
This home will help make it possible for neurodivergent people and their families to find the resources, connection, and belonging that are often so difficult to find.
