Across Kentucky, families experience crises that make it difficult to provide safe, stable care for their young children. Medical emergencies, mental health crises, violence, homelessness, and sudden instability can leave caregivers without support. These situations are far more common than most people realize. In 2025, more than 16,000 Kentucky children entered foster care. When caregivers cannot access temporary crisis care, families are pushed into deeper instability that could have been prevented.

Every week, hospitals across Kentucky encounter caregivers who are admitted for medical or mental health emergencies while their young children have nowhere safe to go. Social workers and risk management teams regularly report that when a parent is hospitalized, there is no statewide resource that can provide short term, trauma informed care for children ages zero to five. Families are often left scrambling for last minute solutions, and many face impossible choices that increase stress and risk. This gap exists in every region of the state, and it has gone unaddressed for decades.

William Joseph Crisis Nursery will change that. Opening in October 2026, we will be the first crisis nursery in Kentucky, providing short term, trauma informed care for children ages zero to five. Our home in Frankfort will serve families from anywhere in the state. Caregivers from Louisville, Lexington, Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky, and every county in between will be able to bring their children to us during moments of crisis. No referral is required. Care is voluntary, supportive, and focused entirely on the safety and wellbeing of the child.

Inside our nursery, we can house up to sixteen children at a time. We have created warm, comforting bedrooms with beds and cribs designed to help children feel secure. Each child receives meals, diapers, hygiene care, emergency clothing, supervision, and nurturing support from trained staff. Every bed represents a safe place for a child to rest while their caregiver stabilizes, seeks treatment, or navigates a difficult situation.

We are currently seeking sponsors for ten of our nursery beds. Each bed costs 891 per month to fully support. This includes nutrition, diapers, wipes, hygiene supplies, laundry, emergency clothing, daily disinfecting, weekly deep cleaning, and the trauma informed staff who care for children around the clock. Sponsoring a bed ensures that when a Kentucky caregiver reaches out for help, we can say yes.

Your gift during Give for Good Louisville helps us prepare these ten beds so we can open our doors ready to serve families statewide. When you donate, you are providing a child with a safe place to sleep. You are giving a caregiver the ability to focus on a medical emergency, a mental health crisis, or a moment of overwhelming stress. You are helping build a resource that Kentucky has needed for decades.

Kentucky has never had a crisis nursery before. With your support, we can open the first one and ensure every child has a safe place to land when life becomes overwhelming.
