Help us raise $25,000 for our youth music programs.

$2,300 goal

I've been a student and teacher at Louisville Folk School since 2018, and I now serve as Board Chair.  I'm raising $2300 for our youth programs in honor of two educators: my Mom, Joyce (who was born on June 23rd) -  a Montessori teacher, and my 23 year old, Joy who just recently became a preschool teacher. Inspired by the patient, present, teaching spirit of both of them, I have had wonderful opportunities to share African music traditions with several different youth programs over the years.  On top of that, I celebrate 6 years of teaching adult group classes next month, with over 125 uniquely fabulous students, learning how music itself builds community!

While the Louisville Folk School has always offered group classes and private lessons for teens and adults, in recent years we have expanded music programs for children. This includes In-School Performances, where folk musicians perform in local schools; the Sounds of Kentucky After-School Program, for depth, hands-on music education; and Summer Camps, which delve into folk and traditional music for a full week. These are just some of the ways in which we share the power of live music and the joy of making music together with thousands of youth across Greater Louisville.

Of the 3,800 children who participate in youth programming through the Folk School, 98% do so for free. This is only possible because of sponsors and donors like you. This year on Give for Good, we aim to raise $25,00 to support music education. Your generosity will allow us to provide a welcoming space where students of all ages and abilities can explore their musical talents, connect with others, and celebrate Kentucky's cultural heritage.

The Folk School is at the heart of my personal calling. I have so often experienced the healing power of music in community contexts, and know firsthand both my, and my students, have had rich experiences in building cross cultural understanding.  These are two elements in our world that are ever so needed, especially for our young folks. I have had the honor of watching the Folk School grow, but so many of our youth arts programs have been funded by arts budgets that are slashed, like the National Endowment for the Arts, and Metro Louisville grants.

I'm reaching out because I know you too believe in the ways we can build strong, healthy communities from the root system - through youth arts programming. I hope you'll join me in supporting this important mission.

With much gratitude, Angela
