Save it Forward!

I’ve always loved to read. Losing myself in a good story has been a part of my life as long as I can remember, including the ones that tore me up as a kid (thanks, Where the Red Fern Grows). 

However, it can be costly, especially with a new book averaging $25-$50. Thank goodness for the Louisville Free Public Library! In the past four years, my library card has saved me nearly $6,000 in all of the books I’ve borrowed, and that’s just for the “hands on” kind. That works out to about $1,500 each year—enough for a vacation, a year’s worth of gas for my car, or a couple of months of groceries. 

What isn’t reflected in that total are all of the unique library services and programs that are 100% FREE, like the monthly Main Off Broadway play reading series at the Main Library that my husband and I have enjoyed this year. Or the annual How-To Festival, comprised of short learning sessions led by experts, ranging from how to grow tomatoes to how to do Tai Chi. With my library card, I don’t have to pay the $450 annual subscription fee for Candid (formerly the Foundation Center), which I use to research grant funding opportunities.
