Real People Fighting For Real Solutions.

For seven years, I worked in homeless services and homelessness prevention. I saw incredible people doing everything they could to help people survive, find stability, and navigate systems that are often incredibly difficult to navigate. I also saw, over and over again, how much of our work was responding to the consequences of bigger problems we weren't always able to change.

When I joined VOCAL-KY earlier this year, I was looking for something different. I wanted to pair services with advocacy—to help meet people's needs today while also fighting to change the systems that keep creating those needs in the first place.

That's what drew me to VOCAL.

VOCAL stands for Voices of Community Activists and Leaders, and that name really matters. We're a statewide grassroots organization made up of real people who are directly impacted by homelessness, incarceration, HIV/AIDS, and the failed war on drugs.

And the people closest to these issues aren't just receiving services at VOCAL. They're leading the solutions!

Real people. Real solutions.

At VOCAL, we're taking on some incredibly complex problems: homelessness. The HIV/AIDS epidemic. The failed drug war. Mass incarceration.

There aren't easy answers to any of them. But sometimes the solutions don't have to be complicated:

Give someone a safe place to go.

Make sure they have food, water, clothing, and basic necessities.

Give people the tools they need to stay alive and reduce their risk of overdose.

Help someone get an ID, connect to healthcare, or navigate a system that can feel impossible to navigate alone.

Listen to people who have lived these issues—and give them the tools and opportunities to advocate for the changes their communities actually need.

That's what VOCAL does.

We meet immediate needs—and fight for long-term change.

At our drop-in center in downtown Louisville, we create a low-barrier, judgment-free place where people can get food, water, hygiene supplies, clothing, harm reduction supplies, help accessing resources, and something equally important: connection and community.

Harm reduction is at the heart of this work. That means Narcan, drug-checking supplies, wound care, and overdose prevention. But harm reduction is bigger than any one supply or service.

It's about sustaining life. It's about housing. It's about healthcare. It's about dignity. And it's about making sure people are still here to build the future they want for themselves.

Then we take what we learn from our community and bring it beyond the walls of our drop-in center.

We organize. We advocate. We build leaders. And we work alongside people directly impacted by these issues to fight for policies that make our communities safer, healthier, and more just.

This is why I believe in VOCAL.

After years of working in homeless services, I know how important it is to meet the need directly in front of you.

But I also know we can't service our way out of homelessness, incarceration, poverty, or the overdose crisis.

We have to change the conditions creating them.

That's what gives me hope about VOCAL: we aren't choosing between helping people today and fighting for a better tomorrow. We're doing both.

And we're doing it alongside the people who know these issues best.

Give for Good Louisville is an opportunity to invest in this work—and in the people building solutions right here in our community.

Your support helps us keep our doors open, keep people safer, build community, develop new leaders, and keep fighting for the systemic change Kentucky needs.

Real people. Real solutions. Real change.
