Troy Burden's We Are the Safety Net Fundraiser

Serving at the Executive Director of HCM since 2011 has been the highlight of my nearly 30 years in the non-profit sector.

I knew about HCM through participation of my own congregation, Highland Baptist Church, as well as my son playing soccer for HYR.  

Working with the 16 other congregations alongside my own is my favorite part of my job.  There are so many Highlands Folks with a heart for mission and wanting to ensure that food and housing insecurity are address, that  parents have a loving and quality childcare environment, that kids can build community through fair play and fun, and that our seniors are cared for.

We Are the Safety Net

When larger systems fall short, neighbors step forward.

Across Louisville, more of our neighbors are facing impossible choices. Older adults are waiting for meals. Families are struggling to keep up with rent, utilities, and groceries. Public support is becoming less certain at the very moment local need is growing.

At Highlands Community Ministries, we believe a safety net is not just a program or a policy. It is people.

It is the volunteer delivering meals to an older adult who lives alone. It is the donor who helps a family stay housed after an unexpected crisis. It is the neighbor who makes sure the pantry shelves are stocked. It is the community that says, “You are not alone.”

This Give for Good Louisville, HCM is raising $45,000 to respond where the need is greatest. Your gift may help provide meals for older adults, groceries for families, help with rent or utilities, or care for a neighbor who does not know where else to turn.

One of the stories guiding us this year is the story of Florence, a 95-year-old neighbor served through Meals on Wheels. For Florence, this program was never just about food. It was about dignity, consistency, relationship, and being known by name. Her story reminds us that no neighbor should disappear into a waiting list, a budget cut, or a system that has grown too thin to hold them.

The safety net is only strong when we hold it together.
