"A world where nature is cherished, protected, and restored."

Ninety-five years ago, Isaac W. Bernheim gave an extraordinary gift to the people of Kentucky—Bernheim Forest, a sanctuary where nature and people thrive together. Today, Bernheim spans over 16,000+ acres of pristine, wild forest, making it the largest privately held forest dedicated to conservation and education in the eastern United States.

Bernheim is 100% visitor, member, and donor-supported. Every trail walked, tree studied, and child inspired is made possible by people like you.

A 600-acre arboretum and over 40 miles of hiking trails offer an innovative space for conservation, education and outdoor recreation.

Supporting Louisville Communities

Through its “Actions Beyond Borders” initiative, Bernheim partners with Louisville organizations like Center for Neighborhoods, Louisville Water Company, and LG&E to:

  • Plant trees in underserved neighborhoods
  • Design and maintain green roofs that reduce urban heat and stormwater runoff
  • Expand access to nature in urban areas

Bernheim also partners with Change Today, Change Tomorrow (CTCT) to grow and distribute fresh produce to food-insecure residents in Louisville, helping address hunger and promote sustainable agriculture.

 Stewarding Nature for All

Your support helps us protect this vital landscape, which includes:

  • A 600-acre arboretum
  • 40+ miles of hiking trails
  • 13 stream headwaters that provide clean water to local communities
  • Critical habitat for millions of wildlife species

Bernheim is a living laboratory for climate resilience, biodiversity, and environmental education. From tracking golden eagles to reintroducing native quail, our research and stewardship efforts are shaping a healthier future for Kentucky and beyond.

Bernheim’s education team reaches over 10,000 students each year through hands-on programs that connect climate, water, and biodiversity, inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

We also believe in nurturing curiosity and connection to nature for all ages. Through school programs, seasonal festivals, and our innovative Playcosystem—a 17-acre natural playground—we connect over 375,000 visitors annually to the wonders of the natural world.

By giving today, you’re joining in on a bold and growing legacy with Bernheim—one that protects wild lands, empowers communities, and inspires future generations to cherish and care for the natural world.
