About Heuser

Heuser Hearing & Language Academy (HHLA) is a comprehensive educational institution in Louisville, Kentucky that exists to empower children who are Deaf and hard of hearing or have speech, language and communication disorders to reach their full potential and effectively participate in their communities. 

Formerly the Louisville Deaf Oral School, Heuser Hearing & Language Academy has been serving children and their families in the Kentucky and Southern Indiana communities since 1948. What humbly began with three children in the basement room of the Woman's Club has today developed into a comprehensive educational facility that teaches students through a communication-based learning experience. From the moment a family walks through the doors of Heuser, they are considered family. We thank you for helping us continue to provide fundamental education for our students.

The Blair Family

Adaline (Addie) Ruth Blair was born on July 30, 2019, and after not meeting some develop mental milestones, she was diagnosed with global developmental delay and speech-language development delay at around 10 months old. Her parents learned about HHLA through a friend, and Addie started attending the preschool program, speaking only a handful of words with very limited sign language. Through the teachers’ and staff’s use of speech, sign language and the arts - dancing and music especially - Addie has gained her voice and blossomed. She is now a smart, strong-willed and independent five-year-old who recently graduated from HHLA speaking in four-word sentences!

The Holley Family

Frances Rose Holley was born on May 23, 2020, and her journey with HHI began almost immediately. Frances Rose was diagnosed with a rare form of conductive hearing loss and was fitted for a bone-anchored hearing aid (baha) in July 2020. She proudly wears her baha and calls them her “ears”! Frances Rose also has a speech and language disorder, and due to the intentionality of how the teachers and staff interact with the children by speaking, signing and singing, Frances Rose is thriving! She is a free-spirited and assertive five-year-old girl with a kind heart and a strong sense of independence, thanks to her teachers, who all tell her she can do anything.

Our Impact

★ HHLA is nationally and internationally accredited through Cognia. 

★ 95% of HHLA children with Individualized Educational Plans have mastered their goals. 

★ In addition to our D/HH and speech classes, HHLA now offers two neurotypical classes. 

★ HHLA provides seven weeks of summer programming. 

★ During the school year, all students receive free audiology services every day, including a daily hearing aid check, repair of broken devices, replacement of batteries and hearing testing.
