Conservation advocacy and community action
The Louisville Audubon Society (LAS) is the regional chapter of the National Audubon Society and a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Mission: LAS works to conserve and restore natural ecosystems and protect Earth’s biodiversity for the benefit of birds and other wildlife—as well as for us humans.
Efforts: Past and current LAS conservation advocacy, education, and outreach efforts and initiatives include:
- Lights out Louisville, a grass-roots program to educate legislators, businesses, and the public about how they can prevent building/window collisions—which kill billions of birds each year
- Louisville's first formalized bird-collision monitoring program to collect localized data for researchers on birds killed or injured due to building and window collisions
- An annual Grants Program, which helps fund conservation projects such as pollinator gardens and a local raptor rehabilitation facility's construction project
- Educational and recreational programs across the community, including birding field trips to local parks, and virtual and in-person talks and presentations across Jefferson County and beyond
- Outreach and advocacy work focused on both private enterprise and policymakers—with Lights Out Louisville’s new partnership with Louisville Metro Government (announced April 2026) one result of those efforts
- NEW for the 2026-2027 school year: a bird-focused research project with JCPS high schools—as well as plans for future expansion
LAS can't do this valuable conservation work without our help. Our donations will allow LAS to amplify and augment their efforts to improve local and global communities for both birds and people.
