I was born and raised in rural Kentucky. As a child, I remember doing chores on my grandparents’ farm, paylake, and in the family-owned grocery store. As an adult, vegetable and herb gardening and farming have become passions of mine; so much so that I started BearFruit & Grow. Much like the Food Literacy Project provides for young people and their families, BearFruit & Grow offers the community a place where they can receive garden coaching services, buy plant starts for their gardens, and purchase farm fresh produce grown in outdoor and indoor urban farm gardens. I was led to the Food Literacy Project in October 2021, offering advocacy assistance after learning that the farm was being displaced.
My day-to-day work to solve the issues of food apartheid, lack of food access, and other systemic food injustices in the Southwest and West communities of Louisville aligns directly with the work of the Food Literacy Project, making joining the board a natural fit.
The organization's move to a farm in Southwest Louisville this year means that young people in the neighborhood where we live now have more opportunities to engage with food and farming. But we need more support now than ever to create a sustainable home where the organization can plant roots and grow this work for years to come.
