Growing up in eastern Kentucky, summer days were spent in the sun, exploring our small town with neighborhood kids. One afternoon, a stranger approached me in my front yard asking for spare change. Uneasy and unsure of what to say, I ran inside and brought him an apple instead. That three-minute interaction stayed with me. Back then, I simply knew that when someone needed help, you shared what you had. It wasn't until years later that I understood homelessness through a lens of justice—recognizing how systemic failures leave our neighbors behind.

Housing is the foundation stone upon which everyone builds their lives. Yet in Louisville, we face a sobering reality: last year, while Coalition agencies housed over 1,600 individuals, more than 4,500 people entered homelessness. The need continues to outpace our capacity. Homelessness is not merely a charity issue; it is a fundamental justice issue, and addressing it requires our collective dedication and resources.

For 17 years as a housing advocate—including the last seven as Director of Education and Advocacy at the Coalition for the Homeless—I have dedicated my career to closing these gaps. Together with our member agencies, we perform daily miracles, from passing policy reforms and leading eviction prevention strategies to organizing against the criminalization of homelessness. We have helped transform the Coalition into a trusted thought partner across the Commonwealth, using direct service, innovation, and systemic change to build a community where safe, affordable housing is accessible to all.
