Rowing with LAR began for me in 2005, when I was asked to row with a young woman named Jenny, a gymnast whose life had changed in an instant after a spinal cord injury. I was drawn to her story immediately. I spent my own childhood in gymnastics, competing until I was 18, before setting the sport aside in college for a new love: crew.

At the time, I had three young children under six at home, and life was chaos in the best and worst ways. But something pulled me out of bed on those Saturday mornings, something I couldn't quite explain. I just knew I wanted to be there.

More than twenty years later, I still am. Jenny and I have rowed side by side through races, through goals met and reset, through two decades of Saturdays. What started as a volunteer match has become something more — two gymnasts, two Jennys, rowing side by side for twenty years.

Three years ago, LAR became a 501 c(3)nonprofit, a turning point that meant this program could finally have the structure and support it needed to last. This year, I stepped into a new role as president. It wasn't a decision I took lightly. I've watched what this program does for people like Jenny and others. LAR needs to survive and more than that, it needs to grow so that other people can find healing, strength, and confidence on the water.
