Fight Hunger with Jenni

     A woman walked into the pantry with her adult daughter. As I began showing her what we could give her, she started to cry. 

     “I didn’t know there was anything like this,” she said as she and her daughter filled their cart. Her life had recently turned upside down, and she’d lost any means of support. Someone had pointed her to United Crescent Hill Ministries’ food pantry. Her own pantry was already bare.

     Every person who volunteers at our four-day-a-week pantry can tell a story like this. People with nowhere else to go show up at our doors and are stunned when they get what they need, hassle free.

     I’ve gotten to know so many of my neighbors in the years I’ve volunteered at the pantry, and I look forward to my Thursday afternoons there, seeing our regulars – and their kids – and meeting people who didn’t need us before, or only just heard of us. 

     Sometimes, they only need us once. Sometimes, we may only see them every few months, when things get tight. Often, they say,  “I don’t want to take what I won’t use.” Or, “I want to leave some for the next person.” Some greet me with a hug every week. 

     As the impact of my Thursday afternoons grew, so did my commitment ot UCHM. A few years ago, I started writing the UCHM newsletter. A year ago, I joined the board. The more I learn about the good UCHM does, the greater my desire to be a meaningful part of its mission. 

     Giving to UCHM is a direct and meaningful way to help your neighbors and our community. Like our shoppers say, “I want to leave a little for the next person.”

United Crescent Hill Ministries is the safety net. Our four-day-a-week food pantry gives neighbors a place where they can find groceries. Our rent and utilities assistance means families can stay in their homes with the lights on and water running. Our program for seniors creates connections for people who, too often, can find themselves isolated and alone. Our children's programs give kids safe place to play and learn. 

United Crescent Hill Ministries does all of that and more. For more than 50 years, we have worked to be the safety net for our 40206 neighborhood and Louisville.  

Now we're asking you to be our safety net. The $30,000 we raise in this campaign, means we will be able to meet the needs of nearly everyone who comes through our doors. Last year, we had to turn away about 500 people when we ran out of funds.
