United Crescent Hill Ministries

When you donate to United Crescent Hill Ministries, you help feed, house and tend to the needs of the hundreds of people who visit our facility at 150 State Street every week. Many come to our food pantry, open four afternoons a week, for help with groceries. Others join our 60-plus program, where, in addition to fun activities, they can share two meals each week. Others come in for help with rent and utilities. Some enroll in the meals-on-wheels program. Others bring their children to our afterschool and summer programs. And when someone comes with a need we can't meet, we work hard to find them a place that can help.  

UCHM is a 51-year-old organization sponsored by 19 churches and supported by businesses and individuals in the Crescent Hill, Clifton, Clifton Heights, and Butchertown neighborhoods.

The seeds of the organization flew into the neighborhood with the devastating tornado of 1974. The churches that joined together to help the community recover from the storm realized there was more they could do to strengthen our neighborhoods long after the tornado was a memory. They agreed on a new mission: “Serving Our Neighbors ~ Building Better Community." Since then, the agency has grown to include programming that serves the wider metro area.  

Each year some 3,500 people come through our doors. Their needs are met through the efforts of two full-time staffers, two part-time staffers and some 350 volunteers.  But we find ourselves facing greater challenges each year, not only with more people coming in for help, but due to the reductions in aid by the federal government. Over the years, by far the biggest provider of food assistance has been the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But that program has already been cut back this year, just as our residents seeing prices rise across the board. In the meantime, other major assistance programs will mean increased health care and food costs for many we serve.
